Thiruthani Subramanya Swamy Temple: Thiruthani is present about 87 kms from Chennai and in this place is located the popular temple dedicated to Lord Muruga. This Lord Subramanya Swamy temple present at the top of hill has got as many as 365 steps. It is known that these 365 steps indicate 365 days present in a single year. Famous for being one of the 6 arupadai veedu of Lord Muruga, this amazing temple have been mentioned by none other than the poet Nakeerar and it has been patronized by the rulers of Vijayanagara.

It is said that Indra the king of devas gave his daughter Devyani to Lord Muruga and gave his elephant 'Airavatam' as dowry. As a result of this king Indra lost his wealth. Lord Muruga then offered to return back the dowry 'Airavatam' to Indra but Indra did not agree to that. King Indra asked the elephant to face his direction and hence the elephant image in this temple is seen facing east side. It is worthy to mention that Lord Muruga's image here has got a hollow in the chest. This is because of discus thrown by asura Tarakasuran at Lord Muruga. Lord Muruga took that discuss in his chest and this caused hollow in the chest of the Lord. One important piece of information is King Indra gave sandal stone as dowry to Lord Muruga and the paste from this sandal stone is applied on the lord and this paste has got superb medicinal values.

People visiting this temple present on the Thanigai hill would be amazed to see the presence of five tiered gopuram plus four precints. Shrines of Lord Muruga as Shakthidarar and shrines of Goddess Valli and Goddess Devyani in other two shrines are simply superb and they are visited by many devotees. This temple is opened from morning 6 AM to 9 PM.
