About Tiruchirappalli District

Welcome to Tiruchirappalli, famously known as Trichy, a majestic and culturally monumental district situated beautifully on the banks of the perennial River Kaveri. Spanning 4,403.83 square kilometers, it proudly stands as the fourth largest city in Tamil Nadu and serves as the ultimate strategic base for exploring the central regions of the state. Steeped in a glorious history that dates back to 300 B.C., Tiruchirappalli was the ancient citadel of the Early Cholas, operating from its legendary capital, Woraiyur. Over centuries, the district witnessed the spectacular rule of the Pallavas, Pandyas, Vijayanagar Nayaks, and the British. Ancient Citadel & Heritage

Trichy holds a phenomenal archaeological legacy. Originating as Woraiyur, the ancient capital of the Cholas from 300 B.C., the city served as a massive tug-of-war battleground between Pallavas, Pandyas, and Hoysalas until the Cholas firmly reasserted their spectacular dominance in the 10th century.

The Rock Fort & Architecture

Under the visionary Vijayanagar governors, particularly Viswanatha Nayaka, the city flourished immensely. He masterfully built the present-day Teppakulam and the breathtaking Rock Fort, around which the massive modern city is built, complemented beautifully by several monumental temples dating back to the 1760s.

Strategic Central Base

Historically a critical strategic epicenter that witnessed the epic Carnatic wars during the fierce British-French struggle, modern Trichy stands as an infrastructural titan. Beautifully nourished by the River Kaveri, it remains the absolute best base for exploring the rich heartlands of central Tamil Nadu.
