About Ariyalur District

Located in the heart of central Tamil Nadu, Ariyalur is a historic and resource-rich district that officially came into existence on November 23, 2007. Spanning across 1,940 square kilometers of vibrant landscapes bordered by the scenic Vellar and Kollidam rivers, the district is a prominent hub of geological heritage and industrial growth. Renowned for its abundant mineral deposits—particularly the high-grade limestone that powers eight major cement factories—and the fossil-rich grounds of Jayankondam, Ariyalur is a crucial contributor to the state's economy. Beyond its natural wealth, the district is deeply rooted in spirituality and ancient history, famously home to the magnificent Gangaikonda Cholapuram (Brihadeshwara Temple), a stunning architectural marvel built by the great Rajendra Chola.

Minerals & Industry

The district is exceptionally rich in mineral deposits. Minerals like Celeste, Limestone, Shale, Sand Stone, Canker, and Phosphate nodules occur at various places. The high-quality sedimentary limestone found in Ariyalur and Sendurai Taluks feeds eight major cement factories in the region. Fire Clay is utilized for manufacturing floor tiles, stoneware pipes, and fire bricks. Additionally, Jayankondam in Udayarpalayam Taluk holds a bountiful gift of Mother Nature with its rich reserves of Lignite, Oil, and Gas. Geologists even consider the excavated fossils in the area as invaluable national assets.

Pilgrim Centres

Ariyalur is dotted with spiritually significant and historically important shrines. The most prominent is the Gangaikonda Cholapuram Siva Temple (Brihadeshwara Temple), built by Rajendra Chola (son of Raja Raja Chola), which stands as a miniature masterpiece of the Thanjavur temple. Other important Hindu shrines include the Vaithiyanatha Swamy Temple at Thirumazhapadi, Kaliyuga Varadaraja Perumal Kovil at Kallankurichi, and Guruvayurappar Kovil. Elakurichi, located 32 Kms from Ariyalur, is famous for the Adaikala Matha Church built by the renowned Catholic Missionary Constantino Joseph Beschi, popularly known as Veerama Munivar.
