Industry & Trade
For generations, Dindigul has been famous for its exceptionally durable iron locks and thriving leather tanning industry. The district also proudly features a flourishing handloom industry in Chinnalapatti, known across India for its Art-Silk and Sungudi sarees. Additionally, Dindigul operates as a massive wholesale market for onions and groundnuts, beautifully supported by an extensive inter-district road network connecting Coimbatore, Madurai, and Trichy.
Tourism & Pilgrimage
The district is home to Kodaikanal, an incredibly popular summer resort situated 2133 meters high in the Western Ghats, famous for its rare Kurunji flowers that bloom only once every 12 years. Dindigul is equally famous for its spiritual landmarks, primarily the legendary Palani Murugan Temple. Equipped with electric winches and rope cars, this temple sits beautifully on a hilly rock and attracts thousands of devoted pilgrims daily.
Agriculture & Higher Education
Agriculturally, Dindigul is wonderfully diverse, supported by nine major dams. While Nilakottai is famous for brass vessels, grapes, and flowers, Oddanchatram and Batlagundu dominate the vegetable and tomato markets, and Pattiveeranpatti thrives in cardamom and coffee. Educationally, the district is highly developed, hosting the prestigious Mother Theresa University for Women in Kodaikanal and the Gandhigram Rural Deemed University.
