Originally functioning as an integral part of the composite Salem District, Namakkal was officially bifurcated and began its independent administrative journey on January 1, 1997, rapidly accelerating its regional growth and development.

Covering a vast geographical expanse of 3,368.21 Sq.Kms, the district lies strategically between 11.00° and 11.36° North Latitudes, and 77.28° and 78.30° East Longitudes. It is completely landlocked yet perfectly bordered by major industrial districts: Salem, Karur, Trichy, and Erode, making it an essential hub for state-wide logistics.
