About Coimbatore District

Welcome to Coimbatore, proudly known as the "Manchester of South India" and the undisputed textile capital of the region. As the second-largest city in Tamil Nadu, Coimbatore is a vibrant and highly industrialized metropolis nestled beautifully on the banks of the Noyyal river. With a rich history dating back to the early Cholas in the 2nd century AD, the city, locally known as Kovai, perfectly balances its ancient heritage with modern industrial growth. Blessed with a pleasant year-round climate thanks to the fresh breeze flowing through the Palakkad gap in the Western Ghats, Coimbatore's fertile black soil and thriving cotton production laid the massive foundation for its booming textile and engineering sectors. Today, it stands as an economic powerhouse and a major scenic gateway to the breathtaking Nilgiris.

Textile & Industrial Hub

Coimbatore is home to more than 25,000 small, medium, and large-scale industries and textile mills. The establishment of the first textile mill in 1888, followed by the development of hydro-electricity from the Pykara Falls in the 1930s, sparked a massive cotton boom. Beyond textiles, the city is famous worldwide for its foundries, automobile industries, motor pump sets, wet grinders, and exceptionally varied engineering goods.

Geography & Climate

Situated in the rain shadow region of the majestic Western Ghats, the city enjoys a wonderfully pleasant climate throughout the year. The fresh breeze sweeping through the 25 Kms long Palakkad gap provides natural air conditioning to the region, making it an incredibly comfortable place for both residents and a thriving agricultural sector.

Tourism & Connectivity

Serving as a strategic entry and exit point to neighboring Kerala, Coimbatore is also the primary gateway to the incredibly popular hill station of Udhagamandalam (Ooty), located just 70 Kms away. Visitors can easily travel to Mettupalayam (35 Kms away) to board the famous UNESCO-recognized Nilgiri Mountain Railway. The city offers impeccable bus, train, and air connectivity to all major destinations.
