History & Geography
Having shared much of its history with Kancheepuram, the region witnessed its peak prosperity under the Pallava rule (600–900 AD), evident in the stunning rock-cut temples of Mamallapuram. The district later came under the Cholas and the Vijayanagara Empire. Geographically, Chengalpattu enjoys a tropical wet and dry climate, largely moderated by its 57 Kms coastline along the Bay of Bengal. The district is generously nourished by the Palar river, along with minor rivers like Adayar, Ongur, and Kiliyar, and is home to over 528 major irrigation tanks.
Economy & Agriculture
Despite rapid urbanization, agriculture remains the backbone of the local economy. Rice is the primary crop, heavily cultivated in Madurantakam, Cheyyur, and Thirukkazhukkundram. The region also produces sugarcane, supported by a cooperative sugar mill in Padalam, as well as groundnuts, watermelon, vegetables, and cash crops like sesame and urid dhal.
Industries
Chengalpattu is one of the most industrialized districts in the state. It houses the Siruseri SIPCOT IT Park (Asia's largest), the Madras Export Processing Zone (MEPZ) in Tambaram, and the highly successful Mahindra World City with its multiple SEZs. Maraimalai Nagar serves as an automobile hub with giants like Ford and Hyundai. The district is also strategically important for housing the Madras Atomic Power Station in Kalpakkam.
Transport Network
The district boasts exceptional connectivity. Roadways: Key arteries include NH45 passing through major hubs like Tambaram and Madurantakam, the Outer Ring Road (ORR), the scenic East Coast Road (ECR), and the IT Expressway (OMR). Railways: Excellent suburban and express networks connect Chennai to the south via major stations like Tambaram, Chengalpattu, and Melmaruvathur. The CMRL metro extension to Kilambakkam is also underway. Airways: The renowned Chennai International Airport is located adjacent to Meenambakkam, providing global connectivity right at the district's doorstep.
