Formation & History
Historically a firka headquarters until 1996, Theni saw a spectacular rise when it was officially bifurcated from Madurai. Inaugurated in 1997 under the guidance of its first collector, Dr. K. Satyagopal IAS, Theni was powerfully elevated to a Taluk and District headquarters alongside Bodinaickanur and Uthamapalayam.
Bustling Commercial Hub
Theni proudly thrives as a massive commercial anchor for the surrounding regions. Most famously, it is celebrated for its enormous, vibrant weekly shandy held every Sunday, acting as a massive local marketplace that phenomenally boosts the local trade and agricultural economy.
Ecotourism & Spirituality
The district is highly adorned with awe-inspiring tourism landmarks, particularly the grand Vaigai Dam and the breathtaking Suruli and Kumbakarai waterfalls. Spiritually, it boasts immense heritage via the Gowmariamman Temple in Veerapandi and the uniquely interstate Kannagi temple, famous for its grand single-day Chitra Pournami festivity.
