About Perambalur District

Welcome to Perambalur, a beautifully centrally-located district in Tamil Nadu, situated roughly 267 kilometers south of Chennai. Functioning as a vital inland region, the district spans 1,757 square kilometers and is proudly nourished by the magnificent Vellar River to the north. Famous across the state as a massive agricultural powerhouse, Perambalur proudly holds the first place in Tamil Nadu for producing an incredible 24% of the state's small onions, alongside robust crops of cashew, groundnut, and sugarcane. Historically, the district has undergone a fascinating administrative evolution—originally trifurcated from the composite Tiruchirappalli district in 1995, and undergoing subsequent structural bifurcations and mergers before finally solidifying its current boundaries in 2007. Offering a deeply authentic rural charm paired with thriving agricultural trade, Perambalur is an absolutely essential contributor to the heartland economy of Tamil Nadu.
