A deep depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal is expected to cross the coast later today, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The IMD has clarified that the system is unlikely to intensify into a cyclone, even as it continues to move steadily.
Current Position of the Deep Depression
The system, which strengthened from a low-pressure area over the Indian Ocean, is currently positioned:
- About 200 km southeast of Pottuvil
- 240 km southeast of Batticaloa
- 280 km northeast of Hambantota
- 330 km southeast of Trincomalee (Sri Lanka)
- 630 km southeast of Karaikal (Puducherry)
- 800 km south-southeast of Chennai (Tamil Nadu)
Over the past six hours, the system has been moving at a speed of around 10 kmph.
Expected Landfall
IMD officials stated that the deep depression is likely to cross the coast between Pottuvil and Trincomalee in Sri Lanka, either this evening or during the night.
Rainfall Warnings for Tamil Nadu
Due to the impact of this system:
- Orange alert (very heavy rain) has been issued for Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam districts
- Yellow alert (heavy rain) has been issued for Ramanathapuram, Mayiladuthurai, and two other districts
Authorities have advised residents in the affected regions to remain alert and follow weather advisories.
