An engineering marvel - Thirumayilai metro station in Chennai to be the deepest ever!!

Located 35m deep below the ground level with 3 platform levels, Thirumayilai metro station would be an engineering marvel after it gets completed. Incredible isn’t it!!

This was brought out by some officials belonging to CMRL. There are various issues in constructing the Thirumayilai metro station such as geological conditions and reduced road width etc. It is now said that this metro station would be the one of the most challenging stations to construct with the above mentioned issues. There would be 4 levels in the Thirumayilai metro station like a large concourse and 3 platforms.

Truth is that this metro station is one of the important interchange stations in phase-2 and 2 stretches meet at this station like Madhavarm to SIPCOT and Poonamallee to Light House.

It is noteworthy that in phase-1 and phase-2 extension the upper track and lower track have been built at the same levels in the platform. The lack of enough land and road width in phase-2 at Thirumayilai has been responsible for creating a need to build 3 levels of platforms.

The officials belonging to CMRL have mentioned that the trains operating between Madhavaram and SIPCOT would be running at the first level or 17m below the ground and at the third level 35m below the ground. Trains on the Poonamallee- LightHouse stretch would be operated at the second level or 24m below the ground.

In Thirumayilai, there are rocks and rocky soil and due to this reason it would be tough to carry out excavation works for building station boxes or the diaphragm wall etc. In addition to these, tunnelling work would also be difficult to carry out here. These were confirmed after the soil investigations.

Construction of diaphragm walls is being carried out by CMRL now at several locations between Madhavaram and Taramani and in other areas for constructing underground stations. These works have been carried out as a part of phase-2 at an estimated cost of Rs 61843 crores. The tunnelling work would be taken up by CMRL late in 2022 and this would be due to the fact that the process would take up to 6 to 8 months of time to get over.

The contractors would play their part in submitting the specifications for tunnel boring machines to the CMRL. The factory assurance tests would be done on these tunnel boring machines before they would reach Chennai and this would be after getting approval from CMRL.
