REHABILITATION CENTRE FOR BLIND WOMEN CELEBRATES FOUNDATION DAY

The Founder`s Day of the Rehabilitation Centre for Blind Women at Mannarpuram  was celebrated  Rich tributes were paid to the late Joseph Gnanadickam, who had worked for the cause of visually-challenged persons’. Gnanadurai Michael, social activist, said the late Gnanadickam, also an ophthalmologist, was concerned over the problems faced by visually challenged persons and decided to work for their rehabilitation through vocational skills .

Mr. Michael said he tried to bridge the gap between the rich and the poor . "The late Joseph had worked as a typist in the Army for a few months to meet the initial expenses for admission to the medical college," he said.

Recalling the services rendered by him as a councilor of the then Tiruchi municipality, S. Sujatha, Mayor . commended the efforts made by the centre in imparting computer education to its members .

S. Gopalakrishnan, project consultant, Rural Training and Guidance Cell(RUTAG) of the IIT, Madras, distributed certificates among the women who underwent computer training.

Hema A. Murthy, a faculty from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, IIT, Madras, who designed the module for the computer training , underlined the need for employment opportunities for differently abled persons.
