Urging universities, publishers and charitable book banks to support the State Government`s initiatives to provide higher education to underprivileged persons, he said “It is highly impressive that 50 per cent of the applicants to engineering courses this year are first generation higher education students.” Apart from scholarships and welfare initiatives, the students would need free text books and reference books, he added.

Students from around 300 colleges benefit from our book bank every year. The service is entirely free, no caution deposit or membership fee, and is available throughout the year, with the only condition that the students return the books after examinations,” he said. Around 50,000 students have benefitted in the past eleven years, he added.
