Due to sudden drop in the wind power generation some parts of Tamil Nadu experienced power cuts early on Monday morning .Normally, wind energy generation tapers by September 15, but this year it has been erratic, causing concerns to power managers.
Wind power generation, which was 487MW on Sunday morning, dropped to 55MW on Monday, resulting in an overall shortfall of 355MW.
The shortage could not be met by the state-owned thermal plants as three units North Chennai 3, Tuticorin 1 and Mettur 4 are shut for annual maintenance. One jointventure unit at Vallur is also under maintenance.
The drop in wind power was drastic and was not anticipated. It could be due to rain in wind mill areas. Whenever there is rain, wind generation drops, a TNEB official said. Wind generation has been on the wane as there have been intermittent rains in Tirunelveli and Coimbatore regions, where there are a large number of windmills.
Meanwhile, power demand has been low owing to a long weekend and cool weather on Monday. The peak demand has been hovering around 11,900MW in the last two days. If it exceeds 12,000MW, more areas may face power cuts.
