Superior Landing System (GBAS) in Chennai Airport!

Posted on: 20/May/2014 3:53:35 PM

Soon, Chennai airport will have a new-tangled Ground-Basis Augmentation System (GBAS) to steer airplane in the course of both take-off and landing.

This new methodology will furnish a full supported approach on all landing maneuvers at Chennai airport, when compared to old technology of Instrument Landing System (ILS).

Within a period of six months, we will complete the installation work for this new technology and it will be taken for testing for the next months to acquire certification, said the sources of the Airports Authority of India (AAI).

The GBAS includes more than three antennas, a CPU (Central Processing Unit) and a VHF data broadcast transmitter; these entire stuff has to be placed near the airport, said a senior AAI officer.

This approach uses the VHF radio network to afford aircraft with GPS links, reliability and approach path data.

The GBAS technology may not be feasible for the secondary landing strip at Chennai airport because of the hindrances on the loom path, said A. Ranganathan, the former airline instructor pilot and aviation safety expert.

Moreover, the pilots are not well trained to exploit the routing aids and technical procedures essential for GBAS, he added.

Also, the ground apparatus should be of the supreme standards and the barrier consent standard must be very stern, he said.
