There are occasions when you have doubts about the Rs. 1,000/- currency notes given by somebody whether it is genuine or counterfeit!

Do not worry! By a close inspection of the note and feeling it by rubbing fingers on it you can confirm whether it is counterfeit or not! For a beginning, just take a Rs. 1000/- note and have a close look at it:

Leading light - The flower pattern on the front side of the note can be explored by passing light on it. Just expose this part to light. You will note the number of the note if it is genuine. The part near the flower pattern will show the figure of Mahatma Gandhi and the registration number of the note in a stream. This will be quite visible under the light.

Registration number - Special ink has been used to display the number of the note in 2 different colours when looking at 2 different angles. While keeping it flat parallel to the ground, the number will be seen in green colour. If you incline the note towards one direction, the number will be seen in blue colour. The numbers displayed on the squares in the bottom portion and the right side will glow when exposed to light.

Straight line - There will be an intermittent straight line on the front side of the note. The word ‘Bharath’, the letters ‘RBI’ and the note number are printed and can be read on this line. As the note is inclined, the colour of the line changes from green to blue. When exposed to light, this line will appear without breaks.

Flower pattern - The flower pattern on the reverse side can be clearly seen. This flower pattern will be synchronous with the pattern on the other side. If you see the note exposed to light, the mirror-reflection of the note number can be seen.

Projecting ink - You can feel the ink while rubbing your fingers on the genuine notes. Reserve Bank of India made this facility for even the vision-impaired persons to feel the projection in the print by rubbing fingers on the note. The words, ‘reserve Bank of India’ on top, the figure of mahatma Gandhi in the centre, the letters ‘R B I’ & the denomination of the currency in figures can be seen [printed in small letters towards the right side of Gandhi’s figure. This can be enlarged & seen through a microscope.

Ashkok Pillar - A projecting symbol can be seen on top of the Ashok Pliiar seen on the lft side of the note.  This symbol varies for notes of different denominations. The blind can feel this symbol to ascertain the denomination of the note.

Year of printing - The year of printing can be seen on the back side of the note. It cannot be seen on the notes printed before the year 2005. This was a step taken by RBI to improve the safety features.

Test & find yourself!

The number of all Rs. 1000.- notes are kept in the security ledger. However, the colour-changing feature is not introduced in currencies of Rs. 100/-, Rs, 50/-, Rs. 20/-, and Rs. 10/-. There is no feature for the blin persons to know the denomination of these notes.

Caution

If you have any doubts that the note is not genuine, please do not attempt to use it. You are liable for punishment in case you were found to be in possession of a counterfeit currency. Don’t mind whatever fashion it reached your hand. The best thing you can do is to surrender it in the police station.
