Chennaites frying this summer

Posted on: 15/May/2014 10:12:39 AM
Yesterday was the hottest day for the Chennaites because the mercury shot past the 40°Celsius mark. The weatherman said it was the hottest day of the year, when the thermometer registered four degrees above normal. And, it looks like there will be no respite for at least the next three days when the temperature is likely to remain above 40°C .

“The second half of May and the first half of June are part of the hottest period for Chennai,” said S Thampi, director general, India Meteorological Department (Chennai). The temperature soars above 40° C when dry, hot winds from the country’s northwest hit TN, said a duty officer at the regional meteorological centre. “This will continue for the next three days.”

Luckily, Chennai has the sea to control the temperature. By 11.30am on Wednesday, the temperature in Nungambakkam reached the peak. “It did not go up further as the sea breeze set in at 11.45am,” said the duty officer at the Met office. By 2.30pm, temperature had dropped to 35° C and by 5.30pm, it was 33° C. At 8.30pm, the temperature was much more bearable at 32° C. In Meenambakkam, the maximum temperature was 40.5° C as the sea breeze set in at 12.25pm.
