Anna Salai–Saidapet Flyover Works 98% Complete; Traffic Relief Expected

Posted on: 16/Jan/2026 9:02:44 AM

The ground-level construction works on the Anna Salai–Saidapet stretch have reached 98 per cent completion, officials confirmed, raising expectations of significant traffic congestion relief on one of the city’s busiest corridors.

A key milestone was achieved with the successful installation of the first deck slab of the 3.2-km-long flyover being built above the Saidapet Metro subway. Once completed, the flyover will enable uninterrupted travel from Saidapet to Thyagaraya Nagar without halting at seven major traffic signals.

Key Project Highlights

- Flyover length: 3.2 km

- Total deck slabs planned: 132

- First deck slab size: 30 m (length) × 16.6 m (width) × 25 cm (thickness)

- Materials used: 15 tonnes of steel, 352 tonnes of concrete

- Road width expanded from 7 m to 10 m after removal of barricades over 1.5 km

Officials stated that deck slab installation will continue at the rate of one slab per day, with construction carried out during night hours (12 am to 5 am) to minimise traffic disruption.

Traffic Impact

With foundation works nearing completion and road widening in progress, traffic flow on Anna Salai has already improved. The flyover is expected to:

- Reduce signal delays

- Cut travel time

- Improve overall traffic efficiency

The project is considered a major infrastructure upgrade for Chennai and is expected to provide long-term benefits for daily commuters.
