Supreme Court Directs Relief for BLOs Amid SIR Pressure

The Supreme Court of India has instructed State governments to reduce the workload of Booth Level Officers (BLOs) engaged in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Key directives include:
- Deploy additional staff to lower duty hours
- Consider exemption requests for those with health or personal constraints
- Allow officers to approach the Court directly if relief is not granted
The intervention comes after reports of extreme pressure on BLOs, including suicides. The Court stressed that while the Election Commission oversees SIR, States must ensure staff are supported and the process is carried out efficiently and humanely.
