AIIMS Madurai Campus 90% Complete; Medical College Expected to Begin Classes by End of August

Construction work on the permanent campus of AIIMS Madurai has reached 90% completion, with classrooms, laboratories, student hostels, and other key infrastructure nearing readiness. The remaining work is progressing rapidly, with construction continuing day and night to meet the scheduled deadline.

The AIIMS Madurai hospital, medical college, and hostel complex are being developed on a 220-acre site at Ko. Pudupatti near Thoppur, Madurai, at an estimated cost of ₹2,021.51 crore. The project commenced on May 22, 2024, with financial assistance from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and is scheduled for full completion within 33 months, by February 2027.

The project is being executed in two phases. The first phase includes the medical college, laboratories, hostels, residential quarters, the Outpatient Department (OPD) building, sports facilities, and a 750-seat auditorium. The second phase will comprise the main hospital building for inpatient services.

In total, 24 buildings, including the hospital, medical college, hostels, residential quarters, and auditorium, are being constructed within the AIIMS campus. Thousands of workers are engaged in round-the-clock construction to ensure the timely completion of the first phase.

The campus has been designed in accordance with international standards, incorporating sustainable construction practices and modern healthcare infrastructure. Once operational, the 900-bed AIIMS Madurai Hospital will include a 150-bed dedicated infectious diseases unit to provide specialized treatment.

At present, AIIMS Madurai is functioning temporarily from the Government Medical College campus in Ramanathapuram. Three months ago, fourth-year MBBS students were accommodated in the newly completed hostel at the Thoppur campus while continuing their clinical training at Government Rajaji Hospital, Madurai.

The students are currently on vacation and are expected to return to the new campus for the upcoming academic session. With construction of the medical college and hostel buildings nearing completion, regular classes are expected to commence at the permanent campus by the end of August or the first week of September.

Officials have also indicated that the AIIMS Madurai campus is expected to be officially inaugurated next month, marking a major milestone in the establishment of Tamil Nadu`s premier central medical institution.
