Smart parking system in Chennai city soon

Catering to the heavy demand for parking in the city, the Chennai City Corporation will set up a smart parking system.
There are over 378 parking blocks enough to accommodate 5,389 cars. And 1,478 motorcycles. As a move to implement this, it is likely that the parking charges will be increased from Rs 5 to Rs 40 per hour.
After conducting a study, the price for parking at high parking demand roads is set as Rs 40 per hour. The rest of the areas will have Rs 20 per hour. For increasing the parking charge, it is necessary for the state government to make a government order and facilitate functioning of smart parking management system.
There are 191 parking lots for cars so far. This offers services for just Rs 5 per hour. For autorickshaws and motorcycles, the parking is free. In the new parking system, the free parking for autorickshaws and motorcycles will continue, said an official.
In zones including Anna Nagar, Teynampet, and Adyar, the premium rate of Rs 40/hour for car parking is proposed. The annual revenue estimated from this parking system is Rs 37.6 crore.
