Flood Alert for the reservoir bank areas: 200 cft of excess water to be released from Chembarambakkam reservoir!

200 cubic feet of excess water is being released from the Chembarambakkam drinking water reservoir. There have been persistent rains throughout Tamil Nadu, including Chennai Metro City, Thiruvallur, Kanchipuram, and Chengalpattu. Due to this, the inflow of water to the major drinking water reservoirs supplying Chennai Metro City is filling up quite rapidly!
One may recall at this juncture that Chembarambakkam overflow was the reason for severe damages due to floods in Chennai Metro City in 2015! There is an inflow of water at 490 cubic feet per second to the Chembarambakkam water reservoir. With this substantial inflow, the water level at the reservoir, which is 24 feet high, has been rising rapidly.
Presently, the water level has just touched 22.10 feet. With a height of 24 feet, the reservoir is now filled with 22.29 feet.
In this situation, 200 cubic feet of excess water is being released from the Chembarambakkam reservoir. Earlier, 25 cubic feet of excess water was being released. Presently, 200 cubic feet of excess water is being released!
At the same time, the inflow of water to the reservoir, which was 532 cubic feet, has now reduced to 452 cubic feet.
The capacity of the Chembarambakkam reservoir is 3645 million cubic feet. Presently, it has 3196 cubic feet of water.
Even as the excess water is being released, a `FLOOD ALERT SIGNAL` has been released to the residents in the reservoir bank areas and nearby. In case there is an increase in the inflow of water to the reservoir, the excess water has to be released. As such, the Kanchipuram District Collector has alerted residents of the villages of Sirukalathur, Kavanoor, Kundrathur, Thirumudivakkam, Vazhudhiyambedu, and Thiruneermalai, where the canals carrying the released excess water flow across.
