Kottivakkam located in Perungudi zone in Chennai is now making sensational news.

Here, a roadside sewage pumping station would be set up by the Chennai Metro Water. It is now said that this facility that would be established on an area of 4305 sq ft would collect sewage from around 400 residential buildings and would send it to water treatment plants in places like Sholinganallur and Perungudi.

It must be recalled that in the past GCC had issued a no objection certificate to set up a 400sqm sewage pumping station at Kaveri Nagar in Perungudi zone. The plan was revised due to public objection to constructing the facility in the residential locality. Point to be noted is that an alternative site was also identified on the burial ground land in Kottivakkam.

The GCC has approved the portion of the burial ground land for setting up of a sewage pumping station as no other vacant land site was available in the area.

According to a senior official belonging to metro water the facility would be beneficial for the surrounding residential places by preventing sewage stagnation. In the extended areas belonging to the Perungudi zone, Metro Water is also undertaking underground sewage connection work.

There are still no actual sewage connections in several households even though the underground infrastructure was completed.  This has resulted in sewage stagnation on the roads.

Sewage outflow from residential and commercial buildings would be avoided once the sewage pumping station starts to operate here. As per a resident belonging to Kottivakkam it was clear that the sewage stagnation would be worse in the monsoon season. This has led to foul smell plus the place has turned into a breeding ground for the mosquitoes. He concluded that the pumping station would provide a perfect solution to these issues.
