The summer rain in Chennai is expected to continue for two days continue for two more days. The rain is expected to bring down temperatures though the hottest period of Chennai’s summer, kathiri, began on May4.

The rain kept the maximum temperature on Tuesday unusually low, at 31°Celsius,the lowest among metro cities except Bangalore, where it was a degree lower. The Met department has predicted moderate to heavy showers across the state for the next two days as a low pressure area off the coast of Kanyakumari is expected to intensify into a depression and move northwest.

However, the temperature is expected to shoot-up after the low pressure dissipates. The day was moderately pleasant and a drizzle was experienced in some parts of the city in the evening. Temperature hovered around 31.8° C for the second day in the suburbs. “Heavy rainfall is possible in one or two places in the northern region and many places in the south,” said S R Ramanan, director, Regional Meteorological Centre.

Moderate to rough seas along the TN coast have also been predicted with wind speeds in the southern region reaching 50kmph to 60kmph. Fishermen have been warned not to take their boats out to sea for the next couple of days.

A maximum rainfall of 7cm was recorded in Mayiladudhurai in Nagapattinam on Tuesday followed by Muthupet in Tiruvarur, with 6cm of rainfall. Ramanathapuram and Kanyakumari are expected to get heavy rainfall on Wednesday. Heavy thunderstorms are likely in Cuddalore, Vellore and Mamallapuram, accompanied by moderate showers in the next 24 hours, the weatherman said.
