Cyclone Ditwah Weakens into Depression; Heavy Rains Lash Mayiladuthurai

Posted on: 30/Nov/2025 9:03:00 AM

Cyclone Ditwah, which had intensified over the Bay of Bengal in recent days, has significantly weakened due to the intrusion of dry air and strong vertical wind shear. Meteorological experts report that the system has now degraded into a feeble depression, described as an “empty shell” with minimal cloud structure.

According to Tamil Nadu Weatherman, the cyclone weakened rapidly after interaction with unfavorable atmospheric conditions, leading to its dissipation and loss of intensity.

Heavy Rainfall in Delta Districts

Despite the weakening, the storm brought very heavy rainfall to several parts of Tamil Nadu—particularly the Delta region.

  • Mayiladuthurai district recorded intense downpours ranging between 140 mm and 220 mm.

  • Significant rainfall was also reported in Thanjavur and Tiruvarur districts.

  • Sivagangai and Ramanathapuram districts also experienced widespread rains.

Forecast for the Next 24 Hours

The weakened depression continues to maintain its circulation over the region but presently lacks significant cloud formation. Weather models indicate that cloud buildup is likely to re-develop later today, especially around:

  • KTCC region (Chennai and surrounding areas)

  • Vellore

  • Ranipet

  • Other parts of North Tamil Nadu

The system is expected to move close to Chennai by evening or night, potentially bringing moderate to heavy showers over the region.

Authorities advise fishermen and coastal residents to remain updated on further developments as conditions may change with renewed moisture inflow.
