A new storm forming near Sri Lanka has been named Cyclone Ditwah. The name was suggested by Yemen, following the naming system used by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO)/ESCAP Panel on Tropical Cyclones.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced that the deep depression in the southwest Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify into Cyclone Ditwah within the next three hours.
It is customary to name every cyclone after it officially forms, ensuring clear identification and communication. For this purpose, 13 member countries have already submitted lists of names that are used sequentially. The name is announced only after the storm has been confirmed.
According to the approved naming list, the name “Ditwah” means “island” in Arabic. It is also believed to refer to the Ditwah Lagoon, a famous natural site located on Socotra Island near Yemen. In Arabic terminology, the word is also associated with a beautiful flower.
Earlier, the deep depression in the Strait of Malacca strengthened into a cyclone on November 26, and it was named Cyclone Senyar, a name recommended by the United Arab Emirates.
