Healthcare experts highlight an urgent need for more voluntary blood donors as India faces a major shortage in blood supply. The country requires nearly 26.2 million units of blood annually, but a deficit of around 13 million units continues to impact hospitals and critical care services.
Doctors say the demand for blood remains constant, with accident victims, cancer patients, anemic children, and mothers facing delivery complications depending on timely transfusions. Since blood cannot be manufactured, voluntary donors remain the primary source of life-saving units. A single donation can help up to three patients through component separation.
Awareness Initiative Launched
To address the growing gap, a new awareness initiative has been launched in Chennai to promote regular blood donation. The program aims to connect donors with hospitals through organized drives, educational outreach, and a structured donor database.
Call for Donors
Healthy individuals aged 18–60, weighing over 50 kg, are encouraged to donate. The procedure is safe, quick, and can be completed within 30 minutes.
Authorities urge the public to step forward and contribute to building a safer healthcare environment for the city.
Give blood. Save lives.
