Power situation slightly better in Chennai

Posted on: 31/May/2013 6:37:23 PM
Chennaiites have expressed relief over the minimum power cuts that have taken place over the past few days. What was a compulsory two hour cut everyday, is now a seldom occurrence. The reason for this is the power generated by windmills across the State. The windfall energy supplies almost 3000 MW of electricity, which is what the city needs. It is difficult to believe that 3000 MW is the power needed for the entire state of Kerala!

However, residents of some areas like Madipakkam have complained about low voltage. “Rain or shine, summer or winter, low voltage is a permanent feature for us in New Kuberan Nagar… (We face) the issue of low and lowest voltage”, says a resident. In reply to this, an official said, “(We) have already taken several measures to tackle the problem. When we use more and more wind power this is [low voltage] one issue. As part of measures to address low voltage, we also use equipment in the decommissioned Basin Bridge unit for reactive power.”
