Indias second plasma bank now at RGGGH in Chennai

Treating Coronavirus infected patients with plasma therapy has been successful.

The news now is the Tamil Nadu government has given its approval in using plasma therapy to treat Coronavirus patients. This was mentioned by the state health minister Mr. C. Vijayabaskar. He added that a plasma bank would be set up in TN and that TN would become just the second state in India to get a plasma bank.

The CM of TN, Mr. E. Palaniswami gave his approval for plasma therapy as there was no treatment for Coronavirus available. Trial is being conducted where 18 out of 20 Coronavirus patients were being treated by plasma therapy at RGGGH in Chennai. It is learnt that the state of TN had got permission from ICMR or Indian Council of Medical Research and from CDSCO or Central Drug Standard Control Organisation.

Detailed guidelines regarding donation and storage of plasma from those who have recovered from the Coronavirus infection has been released. For treating the Coronavirus affected patients in the early stage of the infection, 500 ml of plasma must be extracted through Apheresis method. 

Those persons in the age group 18 to 65 could donate plasma after 14 days of complete recovery and testing negative for Coronavirus infection. There are persons who have BP, diabetes, cancer and those who have undergone surgery etc and these persons are ineligible to donate their plasma.

The state health minister later threw light on the presence of a gap of 28 days between a recovered patient donating plasma and a person donating a maximum of 2 times. Information collected is plasma should be stored at a temperature of minus 40 degrees Celsius. It has been brought to light by the state health minister Mr. Vijayabaskar the TN government has been taking steps to set up plasma banks at an amount of Rs 2 crores.
