The state of Tamil Nadu requires 12000 to 13000 MW per day.
However, the current generation stands at 11000 MW.
This shortfall is main reason for TANGEDCO facing huge losses.
All thermal power stations in Tamil Nadu are not able function to their full capacities. This has resulted in shortfall in generation leading to heavy losses for the Electricity Board.
TNEB engineers view that if this trend of shortfall prevails, annual increases in electricity bills by 15% will become inevitable.
The state government has informed that it has bought only 3% of the demand from private power sources at the cost of Rs. 12.50 per unit.
It has also declared that there would be a rise of 20% in demand for power.
However, it can be seen that this 3% purchase of power from private sources is the main reason for the 15% hike in electricity bills.
This 3% constitutes 295 Crore units of electrical energy and costs Rs. 3687.5 Crores.
From the consumers front this will become Rs. Rs. 5512.8 Crores.
Revenues by payment of electricity bill are Rs, 1220 Crores.
Hence, there is a loss of Rs. 4293 Crores.
Power generation records has been very poor in the Mettur (600 MW started in 2014), North Chennai (1200 MW), and Vallur (1500 MW). Especially, the 600 MW unit at Mettur generates only 400 MW. Vallur plant generates only 1000 MW as against the capacity of 1500 MW. The 3rd unit of Vallur is yet to be commissioned.
If all the above problems are not solved, annual rise of 15% in electricity bill will be inevitable!
