Due to heavy rain in the surrounding Kodaikanal and Madurai region from where vegetables are said to come to the city markets, the vegetables are expected to see an increase in price at Fruit Market and Koyambedu Wholesale Vegetable Market.

Vegetables such as broad beans, beans and carrots were sold for about Rs. 110/kg. Brinjal a kg cost around Rs 60 to 70 at wholesale market and retail outlets disbursed them at Rs. 90/kg. A wholesaler at Koyambedu market stated that tomato prices had spiraled to Rs. 25/kg because of heavy rain in Madanapalle in A.P and Mulbagal in Karnataka from where they receive fresh stock.

Another wholesale trader stated that prices are likely to soar further during the rainy season. According to him, any drop in price can be anticipated not before the next three months. For avoiding losses, farmers have been harvesting even the tender ones, because of the high demand and prices.

It is Kodaikanal that is the biggest supplier in regards to carrots, beetroot, radish and potato. Ladies finger (okra), brinjals, raw bananas and bitter gourd come from villages based in Madurai district. It is rain that has resulted in low output, while difficulty faced in transportation is another issue at this point of time.
