Chickungunya cases on the rise

Posted on: 12/Sep/2014 9:27:12 AM
With rainfall pouring down occasionally in the city for the past few days, there is a considerable increase in vector-borne diseases. Chikungunya is one of those peeping out in more numbers, especially in areas like Ambattur.

The disease is caused by virus which is transmitted to humans by infected mosquitoes. Aedes aegypti also called as yellow fever mosquito bites most commonly during the day time and this serves as the primary agent to transmit the disease.

According to a general physician in the city, the disease has symptoms like severe joint pain that is persistent, body rashes, severe headache and fever. The initial symptoms may be quite similar to that of dengue fever. Though this disease is not very life threatening, the joint pain may last for more months. The main reason for the increasing population of this type of transmitting mosquito is the presence of stagnant water.

It becomes quite tough to control these mosquitoes using conventional measures, as they are more active during the day time.
