Vegetable prices up in the Koyambedu wholesale market

Due to the damages caused by the recent cyclone Varda, the growth and harvest of vegetables were greatly affected. So, the quantity of arrival of vegetables has come down. Consequently, the prices of vegetables such as tomato and okra (lady’s finger) have gone up.
As the quantity of arrival of vegetables has bee less, their prices in the Koyambedu wholesale vegetable market has gone up. The rates per kg in Rs. are:
Okra (Lady’s finger) – 45, beans, 35, bitter gourd – 30, flat beans – 20, and snake gourd – 20.
Tomato, which was sold at Rs. 8/- per kg 2 weeks ago, is now being sold at Rs. 20/- per kg.
When enquired about this, the Koyambedu fruit/vegetable/flower Traders Welfare Association Secretary Mr. P. Sukumar explained that the vegetables sold until the recent period were all earlier arrivals when the harvest of vegetables was good in the last 6 months. Also, most of the vegetables were grown in Tamil Nadu.
However, during the recent cyclone Varda, the vegetable plants especially in Tamil Nadu where damaged severely. This affected the quantity of arrival in Koyambedu market. This has led to the price rise. The price of tomato, which had been falling since last June, has now started rising.
Tomato which was transported in 80 lorries usually, now comes only in 60 lorries. The quantity of arrival of other vegetables has also reduced considerably leading to price rise. This trend may continue till 10th February.
