Cyclone Ditwah Weakens Over Sri Lanka; Heavy Rains Forecast for South Tamil Nadu in Next 24 Hours

Posted on: 28/Nov/2025 12:53:11 PM

Cyclone Ditwah, which moved across Sri Lanka over the last two days, has weakened significantly after interacting with the island’s rugged mountainous terrain. Meteorologists say the system is expected to regain strength once it re-enters the open waters of the Bay of Bengal.

According to an update shared by the Tamil Nadu Weatherman, the system has lost considerable intensity due to land interaction. “Cyclone Ditwah is seen interacting with the rugged mountains of Sri Lanka and has weakened a lot and will try to regenerate once it comes back to open waters,” the update stated.

The Weatherman also noted that today will be the last day of heavy rains in Sri Lanka, where the cyclone has caused severe destruction. The storm has claimed more than 40 lives due to landslides and flooding across several districts.

Heavy Rainfall Alert for Southern Coastal Districts

As the weakened system moves towards the northern seas near Jaffna, several coastal districts of Tamil Nadu are expected to receive heavy rains in the next 24 hours, particularly areas close to the coastline.

Districts likely to be affected:

- Thoothukudi
- Ramanathapuram (coastal belt)
- Nagapattinam
- Thanjavur (southern areas)
- Pudukottai (coastal areas)
- Tiruvarur

The Tamil Nadu Weatherman further clarified:

Very Heavy Rainfall Areas: Nil
Extreme Rainfall Areas: Nil

Outlook

Although Cyclone Ditwah has weakened considerably, weather experts caution that there is a possibility of re-strengthening once the system enters open sea. Fishermen and coastal residents have been advised to remain vigilant and follow official alerts.

Meteorological authorities are closely monitoring the movement and intensity of the system as it travels over the Bay of Bengal.
