As per Section 292 of the Urban Local Bodies Act, 1998 (Rules 2023), it has been made mandatory for pet owners within the Greater Chennai Corporation limits to obtain a license for keeping pets. To regulate pet ownership, the system of issuing pet licenses has been in place through the Chennai Corporation’s official website since August 2023.
To further streamline and simplify the process for pet owners, an upgraded online portal was launched by Chennai Mayor Priya on October 3. The initiative aims to make the licensing system faster and more accessible.
In addition to the improved portal, the Corporation has undertaken efforts to ensure pet welfare by facilitating rabies vaccination and microchipping for pets whose owners register through the online system. To expand these services and provide greater convenience to pet owners and breeders, the Chennai Corporation organized special pet welfare camps on the 9th (yesterday), and plans to conduct additional camps on the 16th and 23rd of this month.
As part of this initiative, microchipping and rabies vaccination were carried out across seven centers under the Chennai Corporation’s jurisdiction:
- Thiru.V.K. Nagar
- Pulianthope
- Lloyds Colony
- Nungambakkam
- Kannammapettai
- Meenambakkam Pet Treatment Center
- Sholinganallur Dog Breed Control Center
A total of 727 pets were vaccinated, microchipped, and issued licenses during the special camps.
The Corporation has announced that similar camps will be held on the upcoming Sundays, the 16th and 23rd, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the same centers to ensure easy access for all pet owners.
