Credit Card Spending in India Hits Record High of ₹2.2 Lakh Crore in September 2025

India’s financial sector has achieved a new milestone, with credit card spending touching ₹2.2 lakh crore in September 2025, the highest in the last five years. According to a report released by CareEdge Ratings, credit card expenditure by Indians has increased by 23% compared to last year. In September alone, total credit card usage reached ₹2.17 lakh crore, marking the strongest performance since 2020.

Experts attribute this surge to festive season offers, increased consumer demand, and reductions in GST rates. Banks offering a variety of special promotions during this period have further boosted both online and offline credit card transactions.

A notable highlight from the report is that private banks continue to dominate the credit card market, holding a 74.2% share. This means three out of every four credit card transactions in the country are made through private sector banks.

Analysts say this trend reflects a significant shift in the digital spending habits of Indian consumers. Credit cards have evolved into essential financial tools for everyday purchases, rather than being used only during emergencies.

Overall, the combination of strong consumer purchasing power, attractive banking offers, and updates in financial regulations has led to a landmark month for India’s credit card market. Whether this growth will continue in the coming months - or decline after the festive season -remains to be seen.
