The Greater Chennai Corporation has announced that a large-scale rabies vaccination and deworming drive for 1.80 lakh stray dogs will begin in June 2025, at a cost of Rs. 3 crore. This initiative is part of the Corporation`s efforts to curb the stray dog population and prevent the spread of rabies in the city.

According to a recent census conducted by the Global Veterinary Services (WVS), the Tamil Nadu Animal Welfare Board, and volunteers, there are 1,80,157 stray dogs within Chennai Corporation limits. From 2021 to April 2025, 66,285 stray dogs were sterilized and 1,08,202 dogs (including 41,917 pet dogs) were vaccinated against rabies.

Currently, five dog sterilization centers operate across the city. To strengthen efforts, 10 additional sterilization centers are being established across 10 Corporation zones. These centers aim to sterilize and vaccinate 30 stray dogs per day each. A team of 78 dog catchers, 23 veterinary assistants, and 4 veterinarians are involved in this program, supported by 16 dog-catching vehicles.

As part of improved monitoring, microchipping of stray and pet dogs has begun. Details such as sterilization, vaccination, and treatment records will be registered on an online portal. The Corporation also plans to register data of 2 lakh dogs, including pets, to ensure better management and public safety.

Additionally, a new accident and emergency care center for pets will be opened in Kannammapet, and free treatment for common pet diseases is being provided across Corporation veterinary centers. Pet owners are reminded that, as per Chennai Corporation regulations, Pet Licenses are mandatory.

This initiative aims to create a Rabies-Free Chennai, with free rabies vaccination available for both stray and pet dogs.
