Chennai Metro Phase II: Porur–Power House Viaduct Nears Completion

Posted on: 09/Aug/2025 1:46:02 PM

The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is set to complete the viaduct and double-decker stretch along Arcot Road between Porur and Power House for the Phase II project by the end of September.

Part of Corridor 4 - spanning 26.1 km from Light House to Poonamallee - the Porur–Power House section will feature a 3.75 km double-decker between Alwarthirunagar and Alapakkam. This stretch will connect with the Phase I network at Vadapalani and allow smooth transfers between Corridor 4 and Corridor 5 at Alwarthirunagar, Valasaravakkam, Karambakkam, and Alapakkam.

Officials said 95% of the 340 piers are complete. However, the project has faced a six-month delay due to logistical issues, including work in congested areas requiring special launching girders and relocation of pipelines and cables.

While most of the viaduct is ready, construction near Valasaravakkam, Alwarthirunagar, and Vadapalani will be finished within two months. Track-laying and overhead equipment (OHE) work is underway at Vadapalani, Saligramam, Karambakkam, and Alapakkam, with completion expected in four months.

The first level of the double-decker will open by mid-next year, while the second level will start after part of Corridor 5 is complete, offering commuters improved connectivity and reduced travel times.
