Posted on: 25/May/2025 9:14:45 PM

With the onset of pre-monsoon and early monsoon rains, renowned weather analyst Tamil Nadu Weatherman has issued an important advisory for travelers planning hill station trips up to June 4. While the season brings beauty to the hills, it also brings the risk of landslides, roadblocks, and heavy downpours in several regions. The advisory highlights safe and unsafe tourist spots in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka during this period.

Tamil Nadu: Safe & Unsafe Hill Destinations

Nilgiris District:

  • Avoid: Avalanche, Pandalur, Upper Bhavani, Parson Valley, Devala, O’Valley, Nelliyalam, Mukurthy, Porthimund. These areas are prone to continuous rainfall and poor visibility.
  • Safe: Coonoor, Ooty, and Kotagiri – Expect steady but manageable showers. Ideal for quiet stays but sightseeing may be limited due to rain.

Coimbatore District:

  • Avoid: Valparai, Sholayar, and other forested hill areas around Valparai – These regions may face heavy rain and difficult access.
  • Safe: Pollachi and lower Coimbatore plains – Rain is expected but will remain moderate.

Other Tamil Nadu Hills (Safe):

  • Yelagiri
  • Yercaud
  • Sirumalai
  • Kolli Hills
  • Meghamalai
  • Kodaikanal

These hill stations are considered relatively safe, with regular monsoon showers but no extreme conditions expected.

Kerala: Areas to Avoid This Monsoon

Monsoon surge will make certain hill areas risky in Kerala:

  • Idukki District: Munnar, Vagamon, Peermade, and Idukki town
  • Trivandrum District: Ponmudi
  • Pathanamthitta District: Gavi and surrounding hills
  • Kottayam District: Mundakayam, Poonjar, Kumarkom, Vaikom, and hill regions
  • Thrissur District: Idamalayar, Athirappilly
  • Northern Kerala Hills: Kasargod, Kozhikode, Kannur, and Wayanad (Vythiri, Pookot, Lakkidi – strict avoid)

Karnataka: Avoid These Popular Hill Areas

  • Coorg (Kodagu) hill areas
  • Chikmagalur
  • Hassan hills
  • Shimoga hill belts
  • Udupi & Mangalore hill tracts
  • Uttar Kannada (Karwar) hill region

These areas are prone to heavy downpours and may experience localized flooding and landslides.

General Advisory:“Plan your hill trips wisely till June 4. Post that, rainfall intensity will reduce in most regions. Stick to low-risk hill stations and avoid deep forested or valley areas,” the Tamil Nadu Weatherman advised.
