The proposed 178 km Chennai–Cuddalore rail line via Puducherry has been put on hold after the Puducherry Government declined the extra costs for route changes and track-doubling near Villupuram. With no cost-sharing agreement in place, Railway surveys remain incomplete, stalling the project.
If revived, the high-speed line could enable 160 kmph travel, reducing Chennai–Puducherry travel time to just 2 hours and easing heavy congestion along the ECR.
