A major makeover is set to begin this week beneath the Medavakkam flyover on the Velachery–Tambaram Road, where nearly 6,000 sq. metres of unused and neglected space will be transformed into a landscaped public zone.
The beautification project, costing ₹1.90 crore, includes two gazebos, granite seating, 550 metres of walkways, a fountain, six Tamil-themed sculptures, children’s play areas, a small open gym, and designated two-wheeler parking. The area will also feature extensive greenery, two borewells, a water sump, and improved lighting for safety.
Highways Department officials said the first phase involves clearing illegally dumped earth, debris, and removing squatters. Of the seven bays under the flyover, two are currently used by CMRL for material storage and will be beautified later. A ramp will be added to ensure accessibility for persons with disabilities.
The project is expected to be completed in three months, after which maintenance will be taken over by the department’s city roads division, similar to the upkeep of the green space under the Anna Flyover.
