For the last few days, there have not been significant rains but the inflow from the catchment areas upstream has resulted in the filling up of the reservoirs now. It was pointed out by some officials belonging to WRD or water resources department that the storage levels of 5 reservoirs (that supply’s drinking water to Chennai) has been maintained at considerable level in this month.
It is learnt that the combined storage of the reservoirs including Poondi reservoir stood at 10582mcft against the capacity of 11757 mcft.
The WRD has plans to continue water release from major reservoirs in Chennai till the end of NE monsoon. As per an officer belonging to WRD, the storage of the reservoirs is at 90% of total capacity and hence it was decided by WRD to have floodgates open till the end of monsoon season due to chances of more rains. From Red Hills and from Chembarambakkam Lake, a minimum 100 cusecs of water is being released now. He added that this water release would have residents downstream on alert as more water might be discharged during the rains.
The measured operation of reservoirs during heavy inflow has been responsible for the WRD managing resources and building storage in the monsoons. Based on the prediction from IMD and from Central Water Commission, the decision of water discharge was taken by WRD. From the Chembarambakkam reservoir, a maximum of 3000 cusecs water was released into Adyar River.
Consistent heavy inflow of water for many days has resulted in the Kosasthalaiyar River carrying more floodwater. As the Poondi reservoir continues to get an inflow of 2600 cusecs of water, 1940 cusecs of water was discharged on Wednesday. Against the full level of 35feet, WRD has been maintaining the water level at 34.53 feet. It is said that the storage in other reservoirs like Chembarambakkam would be stepped up once the rain goes down. By means of a link canal, water is being diverted from Poondi reservoir to other water bodies.
It is learnt that for the second time in a month WRD is diverting the flood water from Kosasthalayar to flush the polluted stretch of Cooum.
