The Greater Chennai Corporation has announced the successful reclamation of 100.29 acres of land through large-scale bio-mining operations at the Perungudi and Kodungaiyur dump yards.
According to an official press release, waste collected from Chennai for several decades had been continuously dumped at these two sites, causing significant environmental damage. To address this, the Corporation initiated a bio-mining project to segregate and safely remove the legacy waste.
At the Perungudi dump yard, bio-mining work is being carried out at a cost of ₹350.65 crore. So far, 26.35 lakh metric tons of solid waste have been removed, resulting in the reclamation of 94.29 acres.
At Kodungaiyur, the project implemented at a cost of ₹641 crore has cleared 22.06 lakh metric tons of waste, reclaiming 6 acres of land.
The Corporation added that fencing and sapling plantation are underway on the reclaimed land. In total, 48.41 lakh metric tons of legacy waste have been removed from both sites, enabling the recovery of 100.29 acres for future development.
