Southern Railway has taken up major yard remodelling works at Arakkonam, aimed at improving train operations and enabling faster movement of Vande Bharat and other express services towards Katpadi.
The project includes the construction of third and fourth railway lines between Puliyamangalam and Arakkonam, track straightening, and the extension of a century-old subway near the station. The works, which have recently commenced, are being carried out at a cost of ₹97 crore.
At present, trains from Chennai Central towards Arakkonam, Tiruttani and Katpadi frequently face delays due to congestion on the existing two-line section. The addition of two more lines is expected to eliminate track-changing delays and significantly improve punctuality for long-distance trains bound for Bengaluru, Kerala, Tirupati and Mumbai, as well as suburban services.
