Under the BharatMala scheme, 45 road projects have been completed for a distance of 1476 kms across TN. This was mentioned by Mr. Nitin Gadkhari, Union road transport and Highways minister. He added that a mammoth amount of Rs 48172 cr has been spent on this.

In Total, there are 1476 road projects and out of that 1230 kms have been completed. This was pointed out by the minister in the Assembly.

What is BharatMala Scheme?

To improve road connectivity in several places including rural areas and to improve traffic congestion, the Bharat Mala project is being implemented. It is worthy to note that these projects would be useful for economic-commercial purposes and in employment generation also.

There are certain important reasons for the delay in implementing the road projects. The reasons are acquisition of lands, pre-construction activities, financial problems faced by construction companies and difficulty in obtaining construction materials etc. The delay in completion of the projects has resulted in an increase in the costs. It is noteworthy that several initiatives have been taken to provide a solution to the issues.

To expedite land acquisition, Bhoomi Rashi website has been introduced. To get approvals from the forest and environment departments quickly Parivesh website has been launched. With these, approval could be got online quickly. This was according to the minister.

Note:

Bharat Mala project was established in the year 2015 by the Indian government. Point to be noted is that this project was slated to interconnect 550 district headquarters through a minimum 4lane highway by increasing the corridors to 50. By this, 80% of the freight traffic would be moved to national highways. Shortest traffic jam free and optimised connectivity to many places through tunnels bridges, flyovers, elevated corridors etc was also included in this project.
