Tamil Nadu Prohibits Autos and Two-Wheelers from Goods Transport; Vehicles to Be Seized

Posted on: 18/Feb/2026 11:11:23 AM

The Tamil Nadu Transport Department has issued a strict circular banning the use of three-wheeler auto rickshaws and two-wheelers for commercial goods transport across the State. Authorities have warned that vehicles found violating the rule during inspections will be seized.

The action comes after complaints from the Tamil Nadu Auto and Call Taxi Drivers Federation alleging misuse of passenger vehicles for cargo delivery through app-based platforms such as Rapido and Porter.

Surprise Inspections Ordered

Transport inspectors have been directed to conduct surprise vehicle checks, especially during peak morning and evening hours. Two-wheelers and autos found carrying goods for commercial purposes will face immediate seizure, and details of the operating app must be reported to the Transport Commissioner’s office.

Why the Ban Was Imposed

Driver unions had staged protests demanding action against unauthorized goods transport services. The new directive aims to regulate the sector, protect licensed goods vehicle operators, and ensure strict compliance with transport laws in Tamil Nadu.
