The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) will soon launch a city-wide door-to-door survey to trace unlicensed pet dogs in Chennai. The move comes after thousands of pet owners failed to complete mandatory dog registration and microchipping despite multiple deadline extensions.
Chennai Pet Dog Registration Drive – Latest Update
The civic body had earlier introduced a free microchipping and pet licensing drive to improve compliance and ensure responsible pet ownership. However:
- Over 20,000 pet owners registered online but did not complete the licensing process.
- Around 74,000 dogs have been officially licensed so far.
- GCC aims to bring the total number of licensed pet dogs in Chennai to nearly 1 lakh.
With compliance still below expectations, Corporation officials will now conduct ward-wise inspections to identify unregistered pets.
Fines for Unlicensed Dogs in Chennai
Pet owners who fail to comply with licensing rules may face penalties:
- ₹5,000 fine for keeping an unlicensed dog
- ₹500 fine for walking dogs without a leash
- Additional penalties for incomplete documentation
The survey is expected to strengthen enforcement of Chennai’s pet regulations.
Why Dog Microchipping is Important
Microchipping and licensing help authorities:
- Maintain vaccination and health records
- Track abandoned or lost pets
- Regulate breeding practices
- Improve public safety and hygiene
The initiative is part of Chennai’s broader urban management strategy to ensure safer neighborhoods and responsible pet ownership.
