Chennai Corporation Eases Pet Ownership Rules, Offering Relief to Pet Owners

Posted on: 27/Nov/2025 10:14:39 AM

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has announced significant relaxations in rules for pet licensing, bringing relief to pet owners across the city. The changes follow legal challenges by People for Cattle in India (PFCI), who had raised concerns over strict guidelines, technical issues in the online licensing portal, and impractical requirements for certain dog breeds.

Major Changes Include:

- Muzzle Requirement Removed: Pet owners are no longer required to fit a muzzle on dogs in public places, addressing concerns for breeds like Bulldogs and Shih Tzus.
- Extended Licensing Deadline: The earlier cutoff date for obtaining pet licenses has been extended, giving owners more time to register their pets.
- Portal Fixes: Technical glitches in the online licensing system, which had prevented some owners from registering, will be resolved.
- No Pet Limit per Owner: Individuals can now register multiple pets without restriction, benefiting those who care for several animals.
- Support for Rescue Organisations: Rules have been clarified for temporary caregivers and rescue facilities, ensuring they can operate without unnecessary restrictions.
