A study published in the journal Neurobiology of Learning and Memory has said that people are bettie at remembering names and faces if they get 8 hours of sound sleep, after seeing the faces or names of this people for the first time. According to the study, different kinds of memories improve with sleep. The study was conducted by researched at Brigham and Women`s Hospital (BWH).
According to one of the researchers, We found that when participants were given the opportunity to have a full night`s sleep, their ability to correctly identify the name associated with a face – and their confidence in their answers – significantly improved.
Those participating in the study were shown 20 faces and names and asked to memorise them. After 12 hours, they were shown the photos again, along with a name that was either right or wrong. The participants were made to answer and also rate their confidence on a scale of one to nine.
Findings suggested that if participants slept for up to 8 hours, the answers were correct 12% more number of times. The researchers would now like to study the implications of sleep on those with sleep issues. Sleep is important for learning new information. As people get older, they are more likely to develop sleep disruptions and sleep disorders, which may, in turn, cause memory issues. By addressing issues with sleep, we may be able to affect people`s ability to learn things at all different ages, they said.
