The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has commenced safety certification trials on the upcoming Poonamallee Bypass–Porur Junction Metro corridor, aiming to commission the line by December 2025.

The trials, which began on August 16, are being conducted by the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO), an independent agency under the Ministry of Railways, as mandated by the certification rules for Metro Rail systems. The process will continue for two weeks.

During the tests, passenger ride comfort will be evaluated at speeds of up to 90 kmph, in addition to detailed verification of traction, braking performance, and track safety.

“Successful completion of these tests will ensure that the new corridor and rolling stock comply with safety standards, guaranteeing passenger safety before public operations begin,” CMRL said in an official press release.

Adding further, CMRL Managing Director M.A. Siddique stated: “These trials are being conducted along the viaduct section 1A, covering the stretch from Poonamallee Bypass to Porur Junction at 90 kmph, completing the distance within just 9 minutes. We reaffirm our commitment to meeting the highest standards of safety and reliability.”

Once completed, this stretch will significantly improve connectivity between the western suburbs and central Chennai, offering commuters a faster, safer, and more reliable travel option.
